IGCSE vs GCSE: which is harder, and what actually differs?

In short

Neither is reliably harder: GCSEs and IGCSEs sit at the same level and universities treat them as equal; the difference is mainly in how they are assessed.

  • IGCSEs are often exam-only; UK GCSE sciences add required practicals examined in the papers.
  • Grade 4 lines up with the old C, and grade 7 with the old A.
  • Choose the school, not the qualification: what matters most is your child's grades.

Parents comparing schools in Dubai often hear that IGCSEs are harder, or easier, than the GCSEs taken in England. Neither claim holds up. The two qualifications sit at the same level, cover broadly the same content and are treated as equal by universities. What differs is how a student is assessed, and that is worth understanding before your child starts Year 10.

What is an IGCSE?

IGCSE stands for International General Certificate of Secondary Education. It is the international version of the GCSE, written for schools outside the UK, and is usually taken over Years 10 and 11 (Grades 9 and 10 in UAE naming), with exams at about 16. Three boards set them: Cambridge (Cambridge IGCSE), Pearson Edexcel (International GCSE) and OxfordAQA (International GCSE). Most British curriculum schools in the UAE teach IGCSEs, and some teach UK GCSEs set by AQA or Edexcel in a few subjects.

So which is harder?

Neither, reliably. The subject content is set to the same level, and in maths and the sciences the overlap is large. Where differences exist, they cut both ways. Some International GCSE maths courses reach a little further at the top: Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A, for example, includes simple differentiation at Higher tier, which the UK GCSE does not. UK GCSE sciences, meanwhile, ask students to carry out a set of required practicals and answer exam questions built on them, which some students find harder than learning practical skills from a textbook.

The more useful question is which assessment style suits your child. A student who performs best in timed final exams and dislikes coursework is usually well served by an IGCSE. A student who thrives on hands-on lab work and steady effort may prefer the UK GCSE structure. Either way, the grade a student earns matters far more than which version of the qualification it is printed on.

How grades compare

Most IGCSEs now use the same 9 to 1 scale as UK GCSEs, with 9 the highest. The scale was anchored to the old letters so that grade 4 lines up with the bottom of the old C, grade 7 with the bottom of the old A, and grade 1 with the bottom of the old G. Some Cambridge IGCSEs still award A* to G, and schools can choose which scale to enter students for. Universities and sixth forms read both scales without difficulty.

Do universities treat them the same?

Yes. UK universities accept IGCSEs at the same value as GCSEs, and so do universities in the US, Canada, Australia and Europe that look at GCSE level results at all. Medical schools that weigh GCSE grades heavily, often when deciding whom to interview, treat IGCSEs in the same way. Admissions tutors look at the grades and the subjects, not at whether the certificate says International.

What this means for your child

  • Choose the school for its teaching and fit, not for whether it offers GCSEs or IGCSEs.
  • Find out which board and tier your child will sit in each subject, because that decides the papers they practise on.
  • Practise on that board's own past papers, not on a different board's, even if the content looks similar.
  • Keep sixth form plans in mind: many schools want a grade 6 or 7 in a subject before accepting it at A Level or IB Higher Level.

Common questions

What does IGCSE stand for?

International General Certificate of Secondary Education. It is the international version of the GCSE, written for schools outside the UK and usually taken at the end of Year 11, at about 16.

Is IGCSE the same as GCSE?

They sit at the same level and universities treat them as equivalent, but they are separate qualifications. GCSEs are the UK versions regulated by Ofqual; IGCSEs are international versions set by Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and OxfordAQA.

Is IGCSE harder than GCSE?

Neither is reliably harder. The content is broadly the same; the difference is in how it is assessed. A student who prefers final exams often finds IGCSEs suit them, while required practicals and coursework suit others.

Do UK universities accept IGCSEs?

Yes. UK universities, including medical schools that look closely at GCSE results, accept IGCSEs at the same value as GCSEs. What matters is the grades and the subjects.

How do IGCSE grades compare with GCSE grades?

Most IGCSEs now use the same 9 to 1 scale as GCSEs. Grade 4 lines up with the old C and grade 7 with the old A. Some Cambridge IGCSEs still use A* to G.
