What is a good UCAT score? The 2025 results explained

In short

Against the 2025 cohort, a total above 1880 is above average and 2220 or more is top 10%, but each university uses the score differently.

  • The official 2025 mean was 1891 out of 2700, from 41,354 tests.
  • Situational Judgement is separate: Band 1 is highest, and some universities reject Band 4.
  • Let the score guide the four university choices, not the other way round.

Every medicine applicant asks the same question once their UCAT result appears on screen: is it good enough? The honest answer depends on the year and on the universities, but the official 2025 statistics give a clear picture of where a score sits, and that is the place to start.

The 2025 results at a glance

The UCAT changed in 2025: Abstract Reasoning was withdrawn, so the total now comes from three subtests, each scored 300 to 900, giving 900 to 2700. Totals from 2025 onwards are not directly comparable with earlier years.

Where a score sits: the 2025 deciles

Deciles show the score at each 10% step. A total of 2010, for example, sits at the 7th decile: about 70% of candidates scored lower.

So what is a good score?

Against the 2025 cohort, a total above about 1880 is above average, around 2010 puts a candidate in the top 30%, and 2220 or more puts them in the top 10%. Whether a score is good enough, though, depends on how each university uses it. Some rank applicants heavily on the UCAT, some set a threshold and then look at other parts of the application, and some combine it with grades and the personal statement. That is why the score should shape the four university choices, not the other way round.

Situational Judgement

Situational Judgement is reported separately, in four bands, with Band 1 the highest. In 2025, 21% of candidates were in Band 1, 39% in Band 2, 29% in Band 3 and 10% in Band 4. Some universities will not consider applicants in Band 4, so a strong cognitive score does not make the Situational Judgement section optional.

Using the score to choose universities

Because the result appears before the student leaves the test centre, and applications are submitted later, the score can guide where to apply. A strong score favours universities that weigh the UCAT heavily; a more modest one favours those that use it as a threshold and give more weight to grades, the personal statement or interviews. Check each university's admissions page for how it used the UCAT in the most recent cycle.

Common questions

What was the average UCAT score in 2025?

The official mean total was 1891 out of 2700, from 41,354 tests. The subtest means were 602 for Verbal Reasoning, 628 for Decision Making and 661 for Quantitative Reasoning.

What UCAT score is top 10%?

In 2025, a total of 2220 or more was at the 9th decile, the top 10% of candidates.

What is the UCAT scored out of?

From 2025, the three cognitive subtests are each scored 300 to 900, for a total of 900 to 2700. Situational Judgement is reported separately in Bands 1 to 4.

Can I compare my score with older UCAT scores?

Not directly. Abstract Reasoning was removed in 2025, so totals from 2025 onwards use a different scale from earlier years.

What is a good Situational Judgement band?

Band 1 is the highest and Band 2 is also strong. In 2025, 60% of candidates were in Band 1 or 2. Some universities do not consider Band 4.
